Let us start with a plain definition. An emotion is your brain's best guess about what is happening inside your body and around you, plus what to do about it. Notice that word: guess. Emotions are not facts that arrive fully formed. They are meanings your brain constructs in the moment, using the information it has. This idea comes from the work of neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, whose theory of constructed emotion says the brain is not reacting to the world so much as it is predicting and building your experience of it.
This can sound strange at first, because emotions feel like they happen to us. Anger seems to strike like lightning. Sadness seems to fall like rain. But the science suggests something more active is going on. Your brain is constantly asking, in a split second and outside your awareness, three questions: What is my body doing right now? What has happened before in moments like this? And what is going on around me? The answer it assembles is the emotion you feel.
Here is a key term that will show up again and again: interoception. This is your brain's sense of your own internal state, the felt signals of your heartbeat, your breathing, your gut, your muscle tension, your energy level. Barrett calls the general pleasant or unpleasant, calm or worked-up quality of these signals your affect. Affect is like the weather inside you. It is always present, but it is vague. It does not tell you why you feel the way you do. Your brain has to add a story for that.
Let me show you the three ingredients working together (this is the 'I do' step, where I walk through it). Imagine my stomach is churning and my energy is low. That is the body sensation. My brain reaches into memory: the last three times my stomach felt like this, I was about to give a speech. That is past experience. Then it checks the situation: I am standing backstage holding notes. That is context. My brain combines the three and hands me a finished emotion labeled nervousness. I did not choose it consciously, but my brain built it from parts.
Now change just one ingredient and watch the emotion change. Same churning stomach, same low energy, but now the context is that I skipped breakfast and it is noon. My brain reaches for a different memory and hands me hunger instead of nervousness. This is why two people, or even the same person on two days, can have nearly identical body sensations and experience entirely different emotions. The body is the same; the meaning is different.
This matters enormously for how we treat our feelings. If an emotion were a fixed fact bolted onto reality, the only options would be to obey it or fight it. But if an emotion is a constructed meaning, then it is information, a signal pointing at something that matters to you. Fear points at something you value protecting. Anger often points at a boundary or a sense of unfairness. Sadness points at a loss. The emotion is not the enemy. It is a messenger.
That reframe is the heartbeat of this whole course: emotions are signals with a purpose, not problems to erase. When you try to delete an emotion, you also delete its message. A smoke alarm is annoying, but ripping the battery out because you hate the noise is a bad plan. The wiser move is to ask what the alarm is telling you, then decide what to do. Regulation, which we build across this course, is not silencing the alarm. It is learning to read it and respond well.
Let me offer a short case story. Maria, a new manager, noticed a hot, tight feeling every time her teammate interrupted her in meetings. For years she had labeled that feeling as simply being oversensitive, and she tried to push it down. When she slowed down and read the signal, she realized the emotion was pointing at a real value: she wanted to be respected and heard. The feeling was not the problem. It was accurate information about a boundary she needed to name. Once she saw it as a signal, she could respond with a calm sentence instead of a swallowed resentment.
There is also good news hidden in the science of constructed emotion. If your brain builds emotions from ingredients, then you can influence the ingredients. You can improve the body signal by sleeping, eating, and breathing well. You can widen your library of past experiences by learning. And, as we will see in the next lesson on naming, you can sharpen the meanings your brain has available to choose from. You are not stuck at the mercy of your feelings. You are, over time, a participant in building them.
Now it is your turn to try the thinking (this is the 'you do' step). The next time you notice a strong feeling, pause and silently name the three ingredients: What is my body doing? What does this remind me of? What is the situation? You are not trying to make the feeling disappear. You are practicing seeing it as something your brain constructed, which means something you can understand. Understanding is the doorway to every regulation skill that follows.
Before we close, a gentle clarification. Saying emotions are constructed does not mean they are fake, or that you are imagining them, or that you can simply decide to feel differently on command. The racing heart is real. The tears are real. The meaning is real too, real enough to shape your choices and your relationships. Constructed means built, not false. Your emotions are genuine, purposeful, and worth listening to, and that is exactly why learning to work with them is so powerful.
