The Four Communication Styles

🎯 What you'll learn in this lesson

Dr. Quinones opens her teaching on communication with a striking claim: "Historically, the breakdown of communication has been the source of every great conflict known to men." Marriages are no exception. And much of that breakdown traces to four recognizable communication styles. In her book The Art of Impactful Communication, she illustrates each with a familiar figure.

Assertive (the goal). You state your needs and feelings clearly and honor your spouse's. It sounds like: "When the bills sit unopened, I feel anxious. Can we handle them together on Sundays?" Assertiveness is the only style that protects both people at once — which is exactly what marriage requires.

Passive. You minimize your own needs to keep the peace — "it's fine" when it isn't. The short-term payoff is calm; the long-term cost is invisibility and quiet resentment.

Aggressive. You secure your needs by overpowering — volume, blame, sarcasm, "winning." It gets compliance but erodes the safety intimacy needs.

Passive-aggressive. Discontent expressed indirectly — the silent treatment, "forgetting," subtle digs, agreeing out loud while resisting underneath. It is the most corrosive to trust because a spouse senses something is wrong but is denied an honest target.

As Dr. Quinones puts it, "Communication isn't just about talking—it's about listening, learning, and expressing ourselves in a way that aligns with truth, empathy, and purpose." Scripture names the same target: not passivity (silence about what's true) or aggression (harsh words), but "speaking the truth in love" (Ephesians 4:15) — the biblical picture of assertiveness. Truth without love becomes aggression; love without truth becomes passivity. The mature path holds both.
