What Does Neurodivergent Actually Mean?

The Hook
Imagine a room full of computers. Most run the same operating system, so they open the same programs the same way. A few run a different system entirely—still powerful, still capable, sometimes faster at certain tasks—but they crash when you force them to run software that was never written for them. For years, people assumed those computers were "broken." What if they were simply built to a different, equally valid design?
That is the question at the center of this whole course. Are neurodivergent people defective versions of a "normal" brain—or are they naturally different minds living in a world built for someone else? How you answer changes everything: how you see yourself, how you parent, teach, pastor, or love the people around you.
Where the word came from
Neurodiversity means the simple, observable fact that human brains vary—in attention, learning, mood, sociability, and sensory experience—just as human bodies vary in height or eye color. The word was coined in the late 1990s by Judy Singer, an Australian sociologist who is herself on the autism spectrum. She wanted a term that described human neurological variation as natural, not as a collection of broken machines needing repair.
From that single word grew the neurodiversity movement—a civil-rights-style movement arguing that conditions like autism and ADHD are, in large part, differences to be understood and accommodated rather than diseases to be erased. The educator and psychologist Thomas Armstrong helped popularize this idea, comparing neurological differences to biodiversity: an ecosystem is stronger, not weaker, for its variety.
A helpful piece of vocabulary: neurotypical describes a person whose brain works in the way society expects and is built around, while neurodivergent describes a person whose brain diverges from that expected pattern. Neither word is an insult. They are simply orientation points, like "left-handed" and "right-handed."
Difference versus disorder
A difference is a variation that is not, by itself, a problem—it only becomes disabling in the wrong environment. A disorder is a pattern that causes real, ongoing distress or impairment in daily life. Here is the crucial point: the same brain wiring can be a difference in one setting and a genuine challenge in another. A highly active, novelty-seeking mind may struggle in a silent cubicle yet thrive as a paramedic. The wiring did not change; the fit did.
This is why this course refuses two extremes. We reject deficit-only thinking, which sees nothing but broken parts. We also reject toxic positivity, which pretends there are no real struggles. Neurodivergence brings authentic strengths and authentic difficulties, often in the same person on the same day.

Why both perspectives matter
The medical model locates difficulty inside the individual and asks how to treat it. This model gave us diagnosis, medication, therapy, legal protections, and the research of bodies like the APA (American Psychological Association) and the WHO (World Health Organization), whose diagnostic manuals make care and insurance possible. To dismiss it entirely would be to lock many people out of help they genuinely need.
The neurodiversity paradigm locates much of the difficulty in the mismatch between a person and an environment that was never designed for them. It asks, "What if we changed the room instead of only the person?" This model gave us self-advocacy, accommodations, and the freedom to say "I'm not broken—I process information differently."
Mature understanding holds both. A dyslexic student both deserves accommodations (paradigm) and may benefit from structured reading instruction (medical model). The two are partners, not enemies. Throughout this course we will keep them in balance: faith and evidence, dignity and support, acceptance and skills.
Individual variation
There is an old saying in the autism community: "If you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person." The same is true across all of neurodivergence. Two people with the same diagnosis can look almost nothing alike—one talkative, one quiet; one gifted in math, one gifted in art; one overwhelmed by noise, one craving it. A diagnosis is a starting point for understanding, never a full description of a human being.
A note on language before we go further: some people say "autistic person" (identity-first), while others say "person with autism" (person-first). Both are used with pride and both deserve respect; when in doubt, ask the individual what they prefer. Honoring that choice is itself a small act of the dignity this course is built on.
Case Study
Marcus, 34, spent his childhood being told he was "smart but lazy." He aced tests he found interesting and failed to hand in homework he found dull. A manager once wrote that he "clearly could focus when he wanted to." At 33, after his own son was assessed, Marcus was diagnosed with ADHD.
The diagnosis did two things at once. Through the medical-model lens, it opened the door to treatment and workplace accommodations. Through the neurodiversity lens, it reframed his whole story: he was not a lazy person who failed to try, but a differently wired person who had been running the wrong software his whole life. "I'm not broken," he told his wife that night. "I process information differently." For the first time, both statements—"I need support" and "I am not defective"—could be true together.
Scripture Reflection
"I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are your works" (Psalm 139:14). The psalmist celebrates being intricately, intentionally formed—not mass-produced. A different mind is not a manufacturing defect in God's workmanship. This verse does not erase real struggles or replace the need for skills and support; it simply insists that the person carrying those struggles was made on purpose and made good.
