Why This Course Exists

Child abuse is not a topic most parents, caregivers, or community members feel equipped to address. This program changes that. Grounded in trauma science and the Christian belief that every child bears the image of God — with curriculum aligned with evidence-based principles, facilitated by a licensed behavioral health professional — this course equips participants with practical knowledge, clear legal obligations, and a personal growth framework for becoming protective forces in children's lives.

Dr. Quinones designed this curriculum from her clinical and forensic background — working with survivors of childhood abuse, families in court-involved situations, and communities wrestling with how to protect the most vulnerable. The program is psychoeducational in nature: it teaches, equips, and transforms how participants understand and respond to the risk of child abuse.

4 Sections · ~4 Hours

Each section builds on the last — from foundational knowledge of what abuse is and how it happens, through the neuroscience of trauma, into concrete prevention and reporting skills, and finally into the personal and faith-grounded commitments that sustain protective behavior over time.

01
Understanding Child Abuse
~60 minutes
A comprehensive foundation in the landscape of child maltreatment. Participants learn to recognize definitions across abuse categories, identify behavioral and physical indicators, understand risk factors at individual and systemic levels, and grasp the long-term developmental impact of abuse on children across every stage of childhood.
Definitions & Types Behavioral Indicators Physical Indicators Risk Factors Developmental Impact
02
Trauma and Child Development
~65 minutes
How childhood trauma reshapes the developing brain, disrupts emotional regulation, and manifests in behavior. Participants explore the neurobiological mechanisms of trauma response, learn to interpret dysregulated behavior through a trauma lens, and are introduced to trauma-informed care principles that guide protective relationships with children who have experienced abuse.
Trauma & Brain Development Emotional Regulation Trauma-Informed Behavior Trauma-Informed Care Resilience Factors
03
Prevention and Reporting
~65 minutes
Practical skills for action. Participants learn mandatory reporting obligations under Texas law, how to identify warning signs before abuse escalates, how to navigate community resources for at-risk families, and how to design environments — at home, in schools, and in faith communities — that are structurally safer for children. Emphasis on moving from awareness to protective action.
Mandatory Reporting Warning Signs Community Resources Safe Environments Reporting Procedures
04
Protective Factors & Personal Growth Plan
~60 minutes
The capstone section integrates research on protective factors with faith-based parenting principles, guiding participants to develop a personal growth plan as a written commitment to protective caregiving. Includes a structured glossary of key terms, a final reflection exercise, and curated references for ongoing learning. The personal growth plan anchors course learning in concrete, individualized next steps.

Grounded in Trauma Science & Scripture

This is not a generic child safety course with a Bible verse appended. Faith integration is woven into the curriculum's conceptual framework: the Christian conviction that every child bears the image of God shapes how abuse is framed as a violation of that dignity, how forgiveness and accountability are held in tension, and how the church and faith community can be either a site of protection or a site of risk.

Imago Dei Foundation

Every child's dignity is grounded in their creation in the image of God. Abuse is not merely a legal violation — it is a theological one. This framework shapes the program's urgency and moral clarity.

Trauma-Informed Theology

Participants learn how faith communities can inadvertently silence survivors through misapplied teachings on forgiveness, authority, and shame — and how to build communities of genuine safety instead.

Personal Growth Plan

The final section grounds clinical knowledge in personal commitment. Participants leave with a written growth plan integrating protective factor research with their own faith values and caregiving context.
